I originally wrote and recorded this album when I was 16. It started out as a joke with my brother, and every song was going to be about being Surly. But as I was working on it, I started writing "real" songs too and it became this. The original was recorded on two tape decks that I patched together in order to overdub, and the sound quality got worse with everything I added. About 5 years later, I re-recorded it on my Fostex 4-track while I was in Tuscaloosa, and that's pretty much what you are hearing now. Craig Gates and I played many of these in the Smears. Should I Write Her A Lovesong? was recorded from scratch last year - I didn't record it on the 4-track with the others in '97 because it wasn't "punk." Torn Up Inside was a song that I wrote when I was 16 and totally forgot about until last year when I found many of my old tapes - that one was recorded from scratch last year too. The original Surly had a cover of Take Me With U by Prince, but I did not re-record that because I do not want to get sued. I wrote all the songs, played all the instruments, did all the singing and everything else.
